چکیده

We study phases and fractal structures of three-dimensional simplicial quantum gravity by the Monte-Carlo method. After measuring the surface area distribution (SAD) which is the three-dimensional analog of the loop length distribution (LLD) in two-dimensional quantum gravity, we classify the fractal structures into three types: (i) in the hot (strong coupling) phase, strong gravity makes the space-time one crumpled mother universe with small fluctuating branches around it. This is a crumpled phase with a large Hausdorff dimension dH ≃ 5. The topologies of cross-sections are extremely complicated. (ii) at the critical point, we observe that the space-time is a fractal-like manifold which has one mother universe with small and middle size branches around it. The Hausdorff dimension is dH ≃ 4. We observe some scaling behaviors for the cross-sections of the manifold. This manifold resembles the fractal surface observed in two-dimensional quantum gravity. (iii) in the cold (weak coupling) phase, the mother universe disappears completely and the space-time seems to be the branched-polymer with a small Hausdorff dimension dH ≃ 2. Almost all of the cross-sections have the spherical topology S in the cold phase. 1 e-mail: [email protected] 2 e-mail: [email protected] 3 e-mail: [email protected]

Simulations of Discrete Random Geometries: Simplicial Quantum Gravity and Quantum String Theory

I investigate two discrete models of random geometries, namely simplicial quantum gravity and quantum string theory. In four-dimensional simplicial quantum gravity, I show that the addition of matter gauge fields to the model is capable of changing its phase structure by replacing the branched polymers of the pure gravity model with a new phase that has a negative string susceptibility exponent...

Common Structures in Simplicial Quantum Gravity

The statistical properties of dynamically triangulated manifolds (DT mfds) in terms of the geodesic distance have been studied numerically. The string susceptibility exponents for the boundary surfaces in three-dimensional DT mfds were measured numerically. For spherical boundary surfaces, we obtained a result consistent with the case of a two-dimensional spherical DT surface described by the m...

Transmission properties of one dimensional fractal structures

In this paper, the optical properties of one dimensional fractal structures are investigated. We consider six typical fractal photonic structures: the symmetric dual cantor-like fractal structure, the asymmetric dual cantor-like fractal structure, the single cantor-like fractal structure, the symmetric dual golden-section fractal structure, the asymmetric dual golden-section fractal structure a...

Observing 4 d baby universes in quantum gravity

We measure the fractal structure of four dimensional simplicial quantum gravity by identifying so-called baby universes. This allows an easy determination of the critical exponent γ connected to the entropy of four-dimensional manifolds.

Collapse of 4D random geometries

We extend the analysis of the Backgammon model to an ensemble with a fixed number of balls and a fluctuating number of boxes. In this ensemble the model exhibits a first order phase transition analogous to the one in higher dimensional simplicial gravity. The transition relies on a kinematic condensation and reflects a crisis of the integration measure which is probably a part of the more gener...
